Understanding the macros(Carbs)

CARBOHYDRATES⠀

What are Carbohydrates?⠀
Technical Term – Saccharides⠀
Carbohydrates(Carbs) are found in both healthy and unhealthy foods so it is very important to know the type of carbohydrates in the food.⠀

Carbohydrates are broken down into its simplest form to provide the body with glucose, which is converted into energy for various biological as well as physical activities.

How body uses carbohydrates?⠀

1. Body can convert these carbs to glucose and use this glucose to produce energy for its day to day functions.⠀

2. Body can convert these carbs to glucose and store it as glycogen into various glycogen stores.⠀

3. Body can convert excess carbs and store it in adipose tissue that is as fats when glycogen store in filled up.⠀

Types of Carbohydrates-⠀
1. Simple Carbs- made up of 1 or 2 sugar molecules.⠀
2. Complex Carbs- made up of more than 2 sugar molecules.⠀

**Energy production is fast from simple carbs than complex one.⠀

1. Simple Carbs-⠀ (i) Monosaccharides- 1 sugar unit⠀ (ii)Disaccharides- 2 sugar unit⠀

2. Complex Carbs-⠀ (i) Oligosaccharides- 3-10 sugar units⠀ (ii) Polysaccharides- More than 10 sugar units⠀

Metabolism of Carbohydrates-⠀

Breakdown of this nutrient happen as the first initial digestion begins in mouth itself in the presence of salivary amylase.⠀

Majority of digestion happens in small intestine in presence of pancreatic amylase. In presence carbs are broken down into monosaccharides or glucose now the end product is used as energy or stored in various stores.⠀

Some of the starch which does not get digested in small intestine is digested in large intestine.⠀

The glucose produced further goes through glycolysis and breakdown of glucose happens and end product is in the form of energy molecules known as Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).⠀

**Glycogen stored in liver in small qty. and in muscles in large qty.High amount of glycogen in muscles gave an illusion of bigger and fuller muscles.
